Staff and Class Structure
We set the Trust and school's direction and implement the strategies to support it and make sure that St. Newlyn East Learning Academy's values and ethos are clear and that everyone contributes towards it.
We empower our whole team to grow by encouraging them to take on more responsibilities and ensure that they have access to, Trust wide, high quality CPD. This creates a more adaptable team that can work collectively to achieve our goals.
Mr Andy Watkins
Headteacher and Designated Safeguarding Lead
This is my third post within Kernow Learning, having previously worked at Charlestown and as Acting Headteacher of St. Column Major. Prior to this, I have worked in six different schools and taught in a range of years, including six years as a year 6 teacher.
Reading is one area of the curriculum that I love along with PE (I used to be able to play a little too!). Away from school, I am lucky to have two children - aged six and two who keep me busy. I have also been happily married for thirteen years. We also have a dog - Dexter - a Springer Spaniel who never rests!
I am thrilled and honoured to now be the new Headteacher of St. Newlyn East - the team we have here are professional, passionate and welcoming. We are aiming to be the best we can be every day, and I know that the school can become a beacon of excellence in Cornwall.
Mrs Tania Findlay MBE
Assistant Head / Year 5 Teacher/Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead
This is my 8th year working within Kernow Learning and I am really excited to be teaching Yr. 5 part time with Miss Paul this year! Within our fantastic school, I am Yr. 5 teacher, Assistant Head, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and a Specialist Leader in Education for English, so I also oversee English throughout the school.
I have worked in three of our Trust schools, as well as other schools in the county, in a school improvement capacity, where I have worked with all staff and pupils to raise standards in literacy. In the Queen's New Year Honours List 2020, I was awarded an MBE for Services to Education, and my investiture at Buckingham Palace with Prince William was one of the best days of my life.
All the children know me for my love of books and reading-I'm lucky enough to be able to review children's books before they are released and am able to pass them on to my class. I'm so grateful for the donations from The Trevilson Trust which has enabled us to get our school library up and running!
I have been married for 23 years and I am a very proud mum too; I have three children: Kelly, who is 23, and is a civil servant; Saskia (18) and Roman (17), who are currently studying for A Levels.
I also love dogs-I have two Dogue de Bordeaux called Betty and Bert, and when I'm not at school, you will find me either walking them on a beach somewhere or curled up with them reading a book!
Mrs Kim Price
Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO)
Miss Jessica Lobb
Hi, I'm Miss Lobb and I teach Foundation.
I've always been so passionate about the Early Years, every day is so different and you get to be so creative. The children learn so much in this year but it's always really fun and playful. I love how enthusiastic the children are about school and how much energy they have.
Music is also a real passion of mine and I try to incorporate music and singing into every day, if not every lesson! I usually run a school choir and we sing together as a school, every week! Singing is great for our bodies and our minds!
I've always lived in Cornwall so when I'm not at school I love taking long walks by the coast with my fiancé and my dog Wilbur.
St Newlyn East is an amazing school and like one big family. I love it here!
Mrs Laura Massabo'
Year 1 Teacher
Hello and Welcome to Year 1 at St Newlyn East!
My name is Mrs Massabo' and I have worked in Year 1 at St Newlyn East Learning Academy for six years now. I am so proud to be a part of this school! As well as teaching my lovely class, I also lead Phonics and Modern Foreign Languages at the school. I am a Specialist Leader in Education (SLE) for Phonics so I help other schools with teaching early reading and phonics as part of the Kernow English Hub.
When I’m not at school I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, especially when the weather is sunny and we can have walks on the beach or in the beautiful Cornish countryside! When I get the chance in the school holidays I also like to visit Italy and Sardinia, where my husband and I have lots of family.
Mrs Hayley Richards
My name is Mrs Richards and I have worked in Year 1 with Mrs Massabò for 5 years. I love it!
I have a passion for all things 'Dance' and even run dance classes at the school, including Ballet and Tap. I live with my two daughters Ella and Lola, our dog Frankie and our cat Polly. We have recently moved into our new house and we're having lots of fun getting it looking just the way we'd like it! On the weekends I like to take Frank on lovely long walks on our local beach, Porth.
Mrs Vicki Stavrou
Year 2 Teacher
Hello I’m Mrs. Stavrou and I feel privileged to teach Year 2 and continue their learning journey in KS1, whilst getting them prepared for KS2. This is my fourth year working at St. Newlyn East Learning Academy and I’m very lucky to be part of a unique and special team.
I am also the Design & Technology and Science lead for the school. As a graduate of psychology, I’m interested in the scientific study of behaviour, and I love the inquisitiveness that both the subjects bring out in children.
Out of school, I love going on long walks and spending time exploring Cornwall’s gorgeous beaches with my husband and two children. One of our favourite pass times is looking for sea glass, and we have built up quite a generous collection! I have a passion for reading, the theatre and getting into the latest box set on Netflix. In the summer time, you might spot me trying to surf-something I’m persevering with.
Mrs Jo Bentley
Year 2 Teaching Assistant
Hi, my name is Ms Bentley, I have worked within the trust for 6 years. I gained a degree in teaching and learning 2 years ago and hope to complete the final year to become a teacher in the near future. I am extremely proud to work at St. Newlyn East School and love my role as support teacher within Year 2.
I have lived in Newquay for 25 years and am so grateful to live by the sea and call Cornwall my home. My home itself is very lively, I have 3 children, Rhys 16, Calum 15 and Maisie who is 9. We spend our spare time walking Ralph, our Westie-Poo, on the beach or at the local woods. I absolutely love reading and spend most evenings at home relaxing with my family and a good book.
Mr James Iliffe
Year 3 Teacher
My name is Mr Iliffe and I am the Year 3 teacher. I have worked in several different schools in my career and taught in many different year groups. I am the Math and Computing lead which are both subjects that I am very passionate about.
I have lived in Cornwall for many years; the best thing is the sea and everything it has to offers. I love surfing, kayaking, snorkelling and SUPing - I would class myself as a water baby. My other passions are participating in triathlons, rugby and travelling. I still compete in triathlons which is a combination of swimming, cycling and running. My passion for travelling has taken me all over the world surfing whilst having an adventure! I like to share my knowledge of the world within my teaching.
Mr Andrew McKim
Year 3 Teaching Assistant
I have now worked at the school for just over two years. I can honestly say it is the most rewarding roles I have ever undertaken. I take great inspiration from supporting the children to develop their skills, knowledge and abilities to over overcome their challenges and succeed.
Outside of school, my pride and joy are my three children. I have a daughter at university studying psychology. I have two boys, which fill me with pride. Football, the beach and gaming preoccupies our time. Any spare time I spend searching for record – have had a passion for this since I was 13 and led to me DJing in Warrington and Manchester.
Mrs Jo Jones
Year 4 Teacher
In the past, I have taught in various schools across Cornwall. I am now in my 10th Year working within Kernow Learning. St Newlyn East is such a special place to work. I have taught many children here and lots have kept in touch by visiting school long after they have left- collecting their younger brothers and sisters!
I lived in Canada for several years with my family and returned to Cornwall to teach.
I have two grown up children. Hannah who has not long completed her doctorate and Lewis who has completed his degree in anthropology. They both live together in London with Hannah's Pomeranian 'Bailey'.
I attended art college in Liverpool. Now I look after the Art curriculum in school! I help Mr Watkins and Mrs Findlay to keep everyone safe in school.
When not in the classroom, I enjoy gardening or visiting Hannah and Lewis in London. I also like to go to the cinema or theatre.
Mrs Sarah Boden

Hello, I’m Mrs Boden.
I have worked at St Newlyn East for many years now and I am proud to say both my children came to our wonderful school. I work in Foundation and enjoy every single minute.
When I’m not in school I enjoy walks on the beach.....looking for sea glass.
I also love spending time with my two ducks, who were both hatched at our school.
Mrs Julie Phillips
Yr.4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant
Miss Holly Paul
Year 5 Teacher
Hi, I am Miss Paul and I teach year 5 alongside Mrs Findlay.
As an NQT, I am in my first year of teaching and have very much enjoyed it so far. When I am not at St Newlyn East Learning Academy, I am teaching in my other shared class, in the Trust, at Charlestown Primary School. While I have not been teaching for long, I have worked with children since I completed my degree in 2013.
I enjoy reading very much, when I was at school my favourite books were the 'My Naughty Little Sister' series by Dorothy Edwards and I am currently reading 'Brambly Hedge' by Jill Barklem to my daughter. As Book Talk is very much ingrained in our classrooms, I love to hear about the books the children have been reading and finding out about new authors and books which will become their classics!
I learnt Makaton first of all, through Mr Tumble on CBeebies ,but as I have a brother with additional needs, I have taken my training further. I love how it can support a person's communication and development and recently taught Yr.5 to sing a song for our Harvest celebrations!
We're so fortunate to live here in Cornwall and I love exploring the fabulous Cornish scenery, whether this on the moors or by the beach-it's so wonderful to be outside in the fresh air!
I am a proud Mum to my daughter Faye, who started school herself in September, she is thriving at school and has a real love of learning-I'm pleased to say I must have passed my love of books on to her as she always wants to read books herself aloud or snuggle down and share a book with me!
Mrs Kim Thompson
Year 5 Higher Level Teaching Assistant
I’ve lived in the village for more than 30 years and worked at SNELA for almost 20 years. I qualified as a HLTA in 2007 and in 2014 I gained a BA Hons. in Professional Practice (Education). I’ve worked across all key stages during my time at SNELA but for the last 7 years have been based in Years 5 & 6. I’ve now got to the stage where children who used to be in my classes are now bringing their own children to our school, eek!
Mr Tom Shepherd
Year 6 Teacher
Hello everyone. I am currently the year 6 class teacher and in my 3rd year of teaching at St Newlyn East. I was fortunate enough to complete my teacher training at St Newlyn East under the guide of our Year 1 Teacher in 2015 before returning as a fully qualified teacher a couple of years later. During my time away, I was still working within Kernow Learning at The Bishops CofE Learning Academy. Having taught across most year groups, I have found it particularly rewarding teaching upper key stage 2 and helping prepare children for secondary school and later life. In school I oversee PE, and alongside Miss Lobb, help to oversee humanities.
When not in the classroom, i have a number of other passions that are mainly sports. I am often found on a football pitch during the winter and then taking advantage of our wonderful coastline attempting to surf in the summer.
